Unless you live under a rock, you have seen a selfie on social media. If you are like me, you have taken more than a fair share of your own selfies, either alone or with your favorite friend, family member, or pet.
Well, Twitter user Liam Rice took his pet selfies to the next level and started a new trend on social media that everyone is dying to get in on. See, he started taking photos of himself while he was making the same face as his dog, and it caught on like wildfire.
So, you feel like you want in on the action, right? I know I sure do. However, every time I attempt to take a photo like the one above, it ends up looking a lot more like, well, a mess. So, I took it upon myself to do a little research.
Read on for some adorable pet selfies, as well as some super handy tips on getting that perfect selfie with your very own fur baby.
1. Don’t force it
It’s much better for you to go to your pet than the other way around. Wait until they are calm and already sitting or laying down and join them where they are. Waiting until the time is right can make all the difference.
2. Use treats to trick them
Once you are in your preferred position, use a treat held either between the phone and the hand holding it or taped to the top of the phone to snap the perfect shot. Certainly, the better trained your doggo is, the simpler this will be to accomplish.
3. Move quickly
It is essential when working with your fur baby that you move as swiftly as possible. Pets have notoriously short attention spans, and if you don’t move quickly, you won’t get that perfect shot.
Protip: It’s always a good idea to exercise your pet before attempting to do a photo shoot; wearing them out is a great way to get them to stay still for that adorable selfie.
4. The right light is key
Lighting is super important. The shade works great, as there are no harsh shadows. The best time of day for a photo shoot is late in the afternoon, according to experts. Remember to turn your flash off, however, as it can be super harsh as well as presenting the risk of startling your animal.
5. Take as many photos as possible in a short amount of time – Rapid fire
Set your camera or phone to snap as many images as possible. Most phones come with an option to snap a series of photos quickly, so even if your pet won’t sit for long, if you take a bunch of shots at once chances are good you will end up with at least one you can post online.
6. Recognize when it is a bad time
The absolute best way to take a lousy selfie is to attempt to take one when your pet isn’t in the mood. If things don’t seem to be going well, call a recess and let your doggo rest. Photo time should be something you both enjoy, and forcing your fur baby sure isn’t a good time for them at all.
7. There’s an app for that
The best news ever is that there is even an app now designed to help you snap that perfect selfie with your pet. Check out Delfie for a cool new way to snap that perfect pet photo. It uses a sound that attracts your dog’s attention, so they look right at the phone! I can’t wait to try it.
8. Get to it!
Okay, now you have been instructed, and you should get to work right away. Do you take the perfect selfie? Comment below and share with me how you did it.
