Summer is well underway, and every farmer’s market is stocked with amazing produce. One cat can’t contain is love of peaches any longer! However, Ozzy, a five year old tabby cat, doesn’t want to eat the juicy fruit, he loves them as a soft, furry bed. Intriguing, right? No bed compares to that of his pile of fuzzy peaches. According to his family, he finds many uses for his love of peaches.
“He nuzzles them, uses them as a pillow to rest, or just stands over them guarding them,” Lydia Coutré, whose parents own Ozzy, told The Dodo.
“[He] was introduced to them the first peach season our family had him,” Coutré said. “He found them on the table and immediately started rubbing on them the first time he was around them, so we think it’s probably the feeling of the peaches that he likes.”
Ozzy Loves Him Some Peaches
His owners leave the peaches to ripen on sheets of newspaper. This gives Ozzy the perfect chance to nest on them. However, if Ozzy’s family wants to keep the fruit free of cat hair, they have to get creative in hiding them.
Coutré explained that:
“My mom once put the peaches in the basement to keep them away from Ozzy. But he still found them, and left a cat-sized hole in the middle of what were previously neat rows of peaches.”
Expanding Family Adopts Ozzy
Ozzy has lived with the Coutré family since the fall of 2013. Lorraine and her mother volunteered at the Harbor Humane Society in West Olive, Michigan. One day they decided to take a peek at the cats that were available for adoption, not expecting to expand their family that day. But when Lorraine spotted Ozzy, it was love at first sight!
Lorraine Coutré told The Dodo:
“I saw Ozzy in the main lobby at the very beginning (his name was Blaze at the time) and couldn’t keep my mind off of him. When I finally got to meet him right before we were leaving, he just completely melted in my arms. Mom couldn’t say no, partially because I was begging, and partially because it was ‘Free Kitten Friday,’ and we brought him home!”
Not All Fruit Equal Peaches
Ozzy is playful and cuddly in general, yet his love doesn’t extend to all circular fruit. In fact, citrus fruit has the opposite effect on him.
“Ozzy hates clementines,” Coutré said. “He smells them, makes a face, turns up his nose and runs away. Ozzy doesn’t cuddle any other fruit — just peaches.”
His strange love affair with the summer stone fruit has become a running joke in the Coutré family. Ozzy’s owners will delight their daughter with pictures of their cat sleeping on the fruit. They even created a family group chat where they can send pictures of him to everyone.
Eventually, Coutré couldn’t keep the hilarious photos all to herself and shared them in a Twitter post.

Within days the post has over 60,000 retweets and over 100,000 likes. Ozzy doesn’t seem too concerned with his insta-fame – he’s more concerned that peach season is going to be ending soon. How will he get his peach fix then?
“I’m just glad the internet loves him as much as we do,” Coutré added. “And perhaps we’ll buy him some out-of-season peaches to keep him company.”
