When toddler Chloe was born 15 months ago, she met her canine brothers Colby and Bleu. It wasn’t long before the trio became fast friends. However, recently that friendship turned into a canine crimewave. Which involved cheese. Because perhaps Colby and Bleu (named for a certain dairy product?) earned their names for a reason.

Of course, Chloe’s mom and dad Nina and Chris Cardinal couldn’t have known that their pooches were about to introduce their toddler to organized crime.

Adorable Toddler Chloe and dogs look innocent

And the two gorgeous golden retrievers have figured out that Chloe, unlike mom and dad, isn’t stingy with snacks.

“Colby parks himself under Chloe’s high chair every night,” dad Chris told Bored Panda. “Lately she’s gotten tall enough to reach into their food bin, so she scoops out kibble and drops it for them, much to our chagrin.”

Now, the dogs are particularly hungry when dawn arrives.

“When 6 a.m. rolls around and they haven’t been fed yet they definitely go looking.”

Especially if the dogs’ usual shenanigans — including barking at mom and dad’s bedroom door — don’t bring them any luck.

That calls for extreme measures of the toddler kind

Enter Chloe. Or rather, enter the dogs, who somehow figured out how to quietly open her bedroom door.  They commenced licking and nudging her gently, and as soon as Chloe’s eyes popped open, all three went out the door merrily.

Mom Nina wondered what in the heck her daughter was doing wandering around free in the mornings. Little Chloe isn’t quite tall enough to open her bedroom door yet. So she set up a video camera and recorded footage of the cute escape.

“They definitely know exactly what they are doing,” Chris says. “And Chloe feeds them on purpose.”

But seriously, could you resist these two faces?

So now the toddler-pooch crime syndicate is busted open

The morning misdeeds have come to a halt because Chris, who manages a software company, and Nina, who’s a nurse, have stepped up the home security and keeping a closer eye on would-be snack snaggers.

However, despite the two species crimewave, Chris and Nina wouldn’t have it any other way. Colby and Bleu are teaching Chloe all the things babies need to know. Like how to get up when somebody accidentally knocks you down with their big shaggy self, The Dodo reports.

“Chloe wakes up every morning and asks to see ‘puppeh’” Chris says. “She has to go give them their pets each morning. They teach her how to be gentle with animals, socialization, etc. — and also how to get back up when they knock her over, which happens from time to time.”

And the dogs are smitten with Chloe.

“They are extremely gentle with her,” Chris says, “Blue especially.”

So now that they’ve put the kibosh on the canine-kid crime spree are the Cardinals having second thoughts about a two-legged brother or sister for Chloe?

“We’re second-guessing having another baby,” Chris joked.
